Design Patterns that Enhance AI Experiences (Part 1)

From Black Boxes to Human Connection

To build ethical, effective, and equitable AI, designers must shift the conversation from what AI can do to what people truly need. A human-centred approach is no longer optional; it’s essential to building AI systems that are trustworthy, inclusive, and emotionally resonant. These systems must respect human judgment, context, and the rich diversity of user expectations.

The State of AI: Moving Fast, Feeling Distant

OpenAI’s rise, creating a $12.5B+ market in just 2.5 years, is a powerful signal of how fast AI has moved from labs into our daily lives. From voice assistants and chatbots to content generation and decision support, AI is now everywhere.

Yet in the rush to deploy, one crucial piece is often overlooked:

How do users emotionally connect with these systems?

Human-like AI experiences require more than just strong algorithms. They demand a nuanced understanding of perception, trust, usability, and the emotional climate of digital interaction.

Context is the New Code

“AI Prompt Engineering” is often seen as the new superpower. But perhaps a better term is Context Engineering because success often lies not in finding a needle in a haystack, but in defining the right haystack to search in the first place.

Foundational models are evolving toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) a horizon still years away. For context, OpenAI defines AGI progression in 5 levels:

  • Level 1: Narrow Task Automation
  • Level 2: Task Orchestration
  • Level 3: Adaptive Reasoning
  • Level 4: Self-directed Learning
  • Level 5: Human-equivalent Intelligence

Today, we operate somewhere between Level 2 and 3, where AI can adapt and reason within defined boundaries but lacks general understanding or judgment.

The Second AI Wave is Coming

I anticipate a second wave of AI in the next 2–3 years one not defined solely by model sophistication, but by:

  • Better human-AI collaboration
  • More emotionally attuned interfaces
  • Wider accessibility across non-technical users

With a talent war underway in Silicon Valley, the industry is optimizing for one thing:

Solving real user problems — not just showcasing model power.

AI Isn’t Just a Tool, It’s a Relationship

As AI tools become embedded into workflows, homes, and even emotions, we must ask not just how they work, but how they feel. Are they respectful? Transparent? Helpful?
